- The Community Girlz started in 2010 as a small group of five 9 and 10 year old girls. The Girlz, all from Carol Stream, came together over their summer vacation and decided to do something special for their community. They met weekly to plan a front yard fundraiser for the local animal shelter. Making crafts, jewelry and balloon animals in addition to selling baked goods and lemonade, the Girlz got the word out through door to door fliers and e-mail and were able to raise $500 for The DuPage County Animal Care and Control. They enjoyed the feeling of doing something good for others and participated in several other volunteer opportunities throughout the year.

- In the spring of 2011 they decided to do it again and began to plan a fundraiser for the summer selecting the American Cancer Society. Adding an additional member, the Girlz raised $800 for the American Cancer Society.

- 2012 brought two more members to the group, and a few additional items to sell at the fundraiser like popcorn and smoothies. Together the Girlz raised over $1,300 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

- The Community Girlz, with the addition of one new member, decided to help raise autism awareness in their own school community at Jay Stream Middle School. They had learned that 1 in 88 American children is diagnosed with autism every year and that boys are 4-5 times more likely than girls to be affected. The Girlz raised $2,200 and donated all proceeds to bring in a guest speaker to raise awareness within the student community and to provide support to students with autism. Their hope was that raising awareness would increase acceptance and reduce bullying.

- They are also doing a project with the graduating class at their school.  All of the proceeds will be going to the new Ronald McDonald House in our area. Night stays there are only $50 dollars, which goes a long way for families staying for 30 nights. Their goal is to raise $2,500 with their school for this great cause!

"When if comes to choosing which charities to donate to, the girls pick nonprofits that are close to their hearts."
